“The Hills of Peru: a geographical and historical sketch” was published in 1911 by Louise Wilhelmina Mears (Class of 1895) – Head of the Geography Department of the Nebraska State Normal School. It’s a wonderful little book to read and gives a lot of descriptions about Peru and Nemaha County at the turn of the century with some old photos thrown in.
You can preview the book here (scroll on the right), (search and download on the left) or click the link at the bottom of the preview window to go to a searchable, printable, downloadable version of the book.
A new book has been published by Cathleen M. Van Winkle, President of the Board of the the Mayhew Foundation, called “The Battle for Freedom: The Life and Times of John Henry Kagi”.
The history of the Sunken Gardens in Lincoln is a bit unique. It began as a Lincoln trash dump and the citizens of Lincoln worked to turn it into a beautiful garden oasis in 1930.
